“Wonderful Indonesia” – that’s the official tagline of our tourism promotional campaign, which replaced the “Visit Indonesia Year” slogan. The new tagline, which was introduced in late January last year, has never been more suitable as Indonesia indeed is a rich country of nature and culture.

With the growing economy, our presence and influence have entered the spotlight. The government remains committed to supporting the tourism industries, with Minister of Tourism Mari Elka Pangestu reaffirming the target of 8 million international tourist arrivals for 2012 or maintaining the 9% growth in tourist arrivals year on year to 8.72 million tourist by the end of 2015.

This year’s target is better than forecast by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, which expect the global tourism growth will moderate from 6.6% post-recession to about 3% in the next few years.

One of the measurements to check our performance is by benchmarking. Let’s take a closer look into neighboring countries Singapore and Malaysia.

The Lion City

Despite the uncertain economic environment, Singapore is expecting tourist arrivals to grow up to 10% in 2012. The forecast for the year is between 13.5 million and 14.5 million visitors, who are expected to stimulate the local economy to the tune of up to S$24 billion.

This year, Singapore’s value proposition to tourist will be boosted by blockbuster projects such as the upcoming River Safari and Gardens by the Bay. In addition to these, the country has a plan to build infrastructure that provides “green roads”, so that the whole country can be explored via cycling and walking.

Three existing park will be renovated, making them destination parks where people can enjoy the relaxing and green atmosphere. Equally, going forward, Singapore is looking to place greater emphasis on aspect like exhibitions and events. Singapore Tourism Board hopes to boost visitor arrivals 17 million by the 2015. This is truly incredible  given the country’s small space and a lack of nature and cultural aspects.

Truly Asia

Malaysia is one of the top tourist destinations in Asia. It received around 23.6 million international tourist in 2009. With a focus on various segments including inbound tourism, outbound tourism, medical tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions) and the hotel industry, tourism will continue to grow rapidly and in 2012, it is forecast to grow around 8%, translating to more than 26 million international tourist.
